Jason Watts, co-founder of Scholarship Prep Charter School, tells a brief but riveting tale of his beginnings in education as first a private school teacher, then district teacher, and then assistant principal. As an assistant principal, Jason's traditional school rose to become the top performer in San Bernardino, but, as he says, they were constantly having to "fight tooth and nail" with the district to keep the programs they already knew were successful.
Finally, when the 2008 Recession came and teachers were having to leave, Jason feared that "all they had worked for" would crumble. So he gathered teachers, administrators and parents together to discuss, and someone mentioned starting a charter school . . . and the rest was history.
